CV Tips
Your CV is a very powerful sales tool and should be designed to
make prospective employers sit up and take notice of you. Whether
you're applying for an advertised position or sending your CV speculatively,
keep a few golden rules in mind:
• Make the layout as simple as possible.
• Keep it concise - ideally no more than two pages. Don't
be afraid to use more, however, if you really have to.
Concentrate on differences you’ve made to your company or
department - anything from saving money to improving results.
• Use short sentences and bullet-points. You can always expand
on these at interview. If you use factual statistical information,
make sure you have the numbers to back it up in person.
• Make the CV easy to dip into to check contact information,
dates, skills, employment history and qualifications.
• Make sure there are no typing and spelling errors in your
CV. Get someone else to check it for you just to make sure.
You're more likely to secure an interview if your CV is tailored
to your target company.
• Employment history, starting with your most recent role.
Don't forget to include company names, job titles and dates.
• Training and education history covering courses, dates and
qualifications obtained.
Your CV can then be tailored to suit the requirements of each job
application by adding the details of skills that specifically relate
to the position you're applying
Advice for Interviews
Learn about the company you are going to see & try to read up
as much as you can about them.
Do a dummy run
of the journey to your interview. Turning up late will not create
a great first impression of you.
Do an
interview plan – a proven fact that does work, list
down your strengths, your weaknesses, your unique selling point.
We have one you can download here
Dress
– Be sensible about how you dress. The real rule for the correct
dress for interviews is quite simple really…. look neat &
tidy!
The Questions
Answer the question
that you are asked
Try & answer them as directly as possible – keep it brief
Organize your answers
Have a positive reason for wanting to leave your current position
if asked - never speak badly of previous or current employers
What if you don’t have enough experience for this
role?
When employers
raise objections you must be able to convince the interviewer that
you have all the relevant skills for this role. So you haven’t
got all of them!! Well, stress to them the experience and quality
of what you do have. Remember, the fact you are being interviewed
at all means you are still a viable candidate for the role.
You’re over-qualified
If your interviewer
deems that you are over-qualified for this particular role, firstly,
reiterate your best qualifications for the role. View the objection
as another opportunity to sell your qualifications. If the interviewer
still sounds unsure, probe a bit more deeply into the resistance.

As
part of our equal opportunities policy, we welcome applications
from suitably qualified people regardless of sex, race or disability.
